The past few days/weeks have been pretty rough for me. I had run out of my medication and couldn’t get ahold of my doctor, so my obsessive thoughts were out of control! Not only was I obsessing about random body image and made up issues, I may or may not have had a seizure while getting my nails done. I spent a few hours in the ER, but no real answers were found. But you know what? I still survived.
Now, I have a lot of bad days with having Body Dysmorphia. I could easily stay in bed all day or tear myself down in front of the mirror. However, that isn’t healthy nor is that conducive to keeping a job. Even when I have those bad days there are some things that I do to turn the day around.
The best thing I can do is exercise regularly. I love practicing yoga and stretching my body. It makes me feel powerful and reminds me that even though I’m not as comfortable with my appearance, my body can do amazing things. Most days I find it hard to take the time to actually practice. My husband is a great support to me. When I am having an especially stressful day he often will remind me how beneficial practicing yoga is….which is annoying at the moment, but it is very helpful to have that kind of support and care.
Another thing I love about practicing yoga, is that my pets will join me! My bunny will try to hop on my back or jump on my tummy when I am doing different poses. Even if he messes me up, it brings a smile to my face and reminds me that life is good.
If my thoughts are taking over, I try to distract my brain from the negativity by reading. I am always reading at least two books at a time. Right now I am reading Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. She also wrote The Girl on the Train, which was the best thriller I have read in a long time. I am also listening to The Breakdown by B. A. Paris on Audible.
After days when I have been extra hard on myself, I like to take a nice bubble bath (I mean who doesn’t?!) and listen to my books on Audible. It takes me away from my obsessive thoughts and gives me a chance to relax and focus on something else.
If you may have notice, physiological thrillers are my go to genre. If you enjoy this genre as well, I have plenty of suggestions for you! Just ask in the comments and I’ll give you some authors or titles that I highly recommend.
Of course, when all else fails, the bad days can be solved by just taking a nap or calling it a night. I have had my share of sleepless nights due to racing thoughts, but I still find it calming to lay down with my hubby and be thankful for my little family.
There are many other ways that I cope with a bad BDD day, but I will share those on another post. If you have any solutions to a bad mental health day, let me know in the comments. I would love to add more ideas to my list!
As always, thanks for reading.

Wow, this was a very interesting read. It is so great to see that you are helping yourself with positive things that help with your thoughts. If only I could learn to do that more with my anxiety. I have trouble with that. You have some great ideas here though. Thank you for sharing.

I love that even when you are having bad days you really push to do positive things. I’ve been trying to do more of that myself. For a long time, if things didn’t go right or if I was having a bad day with my Anxiety I would give into the moment and drift. I’ve been pushing through recently and I feel better.

I have recently taken up yoga and have been surprised at how calming it is. I know that it is widely praised for being so good for the body and soul but until I tried it I didn’t quite believe it. Great to see that it is helping you manage things and, although I realise there will be difficult times, it sounds like you know what you need to do when things begin to become tough. x
